Golden Spiders
From the second Risteard Cooper began the night with a song about Irelands unfortunate World Cup exit, the night was underway. Risteard was covering for Des Bishop after late notice, as Des had to fly to America for family reasons. Risteard was a very entertaining host considering the somewhat extensive awards ceremony.
A Ferrai in the lobby of the Burlington greeted guests to promote the up coming Top Gear show, as we were ushered into a wine reception to get our bearings. The Spiders continues to be fantastic place to socialise with an endless number of people that you deal within the online marketing industry.
As we tweeted from our table, the wine flowed and the winners celebrated. We were cheering on our own Julian Lynch as he presented Martin O’Leary the award for best financial services website.
Here is a list of all the winners.
We would like to say particular congratulations to:
Best Financial Services Website – RaboDirect
Best use of Film, Digital Animation or Motion Graphic – Discover Ireland
Best Interactive Marketing Campaign – O2
The big winners of the night were Muzu TV who won the Grand Prix award. They have had a fantastic year and fully deserve the accolade. The evening drew to close by the bar over a few ‘shandy’s’ where the Radical team enjoyed the company of our many industry collegues.
A thanks to everyone who organised it. Always a great night!
See you next year.

A Canadian woman on sick leave for depression says she lost her benefits after her insurance agent found photos of her apparently having fun on Facebook.
Nathalie Blanchard said Monday she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits until payments dried up this fall.
When Blanchard called her insurance provider, Manulife, to find out why, she says she was told the Facebook photos showed she was able to work.
“If you have insurance, be careful. This is a major battle and it’s not going to be easy,” Blanchard, 29, said in a telephone interview from her home in Bromont, Quebec.
She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on Facebook, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on a sun holiday.
Blanchard said Manulife told her it was evidence she is no longer depressed.

Google AdWords is text only advertising. There are no images or videos or any of the other rich content that is currently associated with banner advertising. Therefore, the branding possibilities are limited. As an example, have a look at how companies like O2 and Vodafone use a combination of text-based and image-based adverts to build and enhance their brands.
So, while text is often useful, sometimes videos and pictures are a more effective way to receive information. For example, if you want to learn how to open a bottle of wine, a video showing you how to do this is likely the best result for your search. Over the past few years, Google has blended videos, images, maps and more into the search results on Google.
It also makes sense for Google to provide richer types of information in the ads. For example, if you are looking to buy your mother a new handbag for the holidays, you might want to see pictures, prices, the addresses of boutiques in your area and a map of how to get there — all within the advert.
To provide a better search ads experience, Google has been developing and testing a variety of new ad formats. These formats are focused on giving you the information you need, while ensuring that the adverts continue to be relevant and useful.

Most of Google’s business comes from search advertising (also called Pay per Click – PPC). This is the little adverts that appear at the top and to the right hand sid of the the search results. However, they are also, to a very small extent, in the display advertising business. To prove a point, Google paid $3.1 billion for DoubleClick in 2008, one of the leading players in the display advertising business.
Yesterday, Google announced that it was acquiring a company called Teracent, a dynamic ad serving and optimization startup company.
Teracent’s technology displays ads in real-time. Ad elements go in and Teracent’s technology figures out how they can be combined to produce the best results:
Teracent’s technology can pick and choose from literally thousands of creative elements of a display ad in real-time — tweaking images, products, messages or colors. These elements can be optimized depending on factors like geographic location, language, the content of the website, the time of day or the past performance of different ads.
This technology can help advertisers get better results from their display ad campaigns. In turn, this enables publishers to make more money from their ad space and delivers web users better ads and more ad-funded web content.
Google’s announcement shows the product of a Teracent optimization:
The ad on the bottom is the product of Teracent picking and choosing ad elements using machine learning, and ostensibly converts better than the ad on the top.
Google believes that Teracent’s technology “has great potential to improve display advertising on the web” and once Teracent is in the Google fold, plans to make its technology available to DoubleClick and Google Content Network advertisers.

From -TechCrunch
Rupert Murdoch is pointing a gun to Google’s head, and Microsoft is helping him pull back the trigger. For the past few weeks, Murdoch and his officers at News Corp. have been very vocal about their distaste for Google and their desire to lead other media companies in a boycott of sorts.
Murdoch keeps threatening to stop letting Google index the WSJ.com and his other media sites, and wants other news sites to join him in this self-imposed silence. The folks at Microsoft’s Bing think this is a great idea. Not only that, but the FT reports that Microsoft is in fact in discussions with News Corp. and other publishers about the possibility of paying them to remove their sites from Google’s search index. This report comes on the heels of a meeting in Europe where Bing dangled the prospect of premium spots in search results to publishers and outright money for search R&D.

Google’s Chrome OS (which stands for operating system) should be available for netbooks will be by about the end of 2010, a Google executive has confirmed.
Firstly, what is Google Chrome OS?
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google intends to open-source its code, and therefore netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because Google is already talking to partners about the project, and soon be working with the open source community, they wanted to share their vision for Google Chrome OS so that the general techie community understands what they are trying to achieve.
In layman’s terms, Google Chrome OS is an operating systems for computers that IS the browser. It removes the necessity for the operating system (such as Windows) to be installed onto the computer – the operating system IS the browser (an Google’s browser is Chrome, so they will be building their OS into Chrome).
Now, have a look at this short video to get a simple overview of what Google Chrome OS is all about.
Caesar Sengupta is group product manager in charge of Chrome OS and has recently outlined Google’s plans to open source the project as Chromium OS.
This is what he had to say:
“This is the initial sketch and we will colour it in over the course of the next year. We want to take this opportunity to explain why we’re excited about the project and how it is a fundamentally different model of computing.
“First, it’s all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.
“Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn’t trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer.
“Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code. If your system has been compromised, it is designed to fix itself with a reboot. While no computer can be made completely secure, we’re going to make life much harder (and less profitable) for the bad guys. If you dig security, read the Chrome OS Security Overview or watch the video.
