Microsoft Buying the News?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

From -TechCrunch

Rupert Murdoch is pointing a gun to Google’s head, and Microsoft is helping him pull back the trigger. For the past few weeks, Murdoch and his officers at News Corp. have been very vocal about their distaste for Google and their desire to lead other media companies in a boycott of sorts.

Murdoch keeps threatening to stop letting Google index the WSJ.com and his other media sites, and wants other news sites to join him in this self-imposed silence. The folks at Microsoft’s Bing think this is a great idea. Not only that, but the FT reports that Microsoft is in fact in discussions with News Corp. and other publishers about the possibility of paying them to remove their sites from Google’s search index. This report comes on the heels of a meeting in Europe where Bing dangled the prospect of premium spots in search results to publishers and outright money for search R&D.

Eircom blocking Priate Bay

Friday, September 4th, 2009

eircom has decided to block Priate Bay.  So, what does this mean?

Pirate Bay is one of the biggest ports of call for downloaders of pirate music and videos.  The site does now actually store the music, etc but simply acts as a conduit for people download using various “torrent” applications.

Eircom says: “

“In making the Order, requiring Eircom to block access to The Pirate Bay website, the High Court was satisfied that the website is dedicated to facilitating the illegal downloading of copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright owners.

“Eircom recognises the legitimate rights of the owners of copyrighted material and believes that individuals who share or download copyrighted material without the authorisation or the permission of the owner of that content are acting illegally.

“Eircom would like to reassure customers that as part of the block Eircom will not monitor customers’ activities at any stage, nor will it place any monitoring equipment or software on its network in order to facilitate this block,” the company said.”

But why now?

Interestingly, the eircom network has toppled over a few times in the past few months.  Perhaps this has been caused by excessive use of bandwidth – which just might be due to people using sites like Pirate Bay as a conduit to download their piratted music!

Of course, the cynical might also sugggest that this is because Eircom has it’s own online music store (similar to iTunes) and therefore want to increase legal sales!

What is Google Wave?

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Every year, Google hosts a major conference for Developers of products around the Google product suite. This is called Google I/O. This year, the even took place over 27th-28th May in San Francisco. You can get all of this years I/O sessions from here.

One of the session that really caught my eye was the one where they introduced and demo’d a product that they call Google Wave.  This is a new (yet to be resleased) collaboration and communication tool.  Having watched the demo a few times,  it really looks like Google are moving email to another level, altogether.

The session on the Google Wave is an hour and twenty long but is well worth wacthing to give you some idea of what the folks in Google and up to behind the scenes.
